January

Monthly Shetland Life Articles

Shetland Architectural Society members are writing a range of articles in Shetland Life about architecture and placemaking. Look out for the articles throughout 2010.

Schools Programme

There will be an ongoing programme of schools events throughout the year. Workshops with primary and secondary school pupils will look young people’s perception of place and space.

Sandwick Public Art Project

Shetland College students are designing a piece of contemporary public art for a new housing development in Sandwick based on Shetland’s archaeology. Additional partners: Hjaltland Housing Association/ Shetland College/ Alan McKay Architect/ Sandwick School

February

February 12th: Shetland Museum & Archives: 18.30 for 19.00: People, Places and Planet Presentation

Diarmaid Lawlor, Head of Urbanism with Architecture+Design Scotland, looks at how sustainability can contribute to placemaking and our built environment. Additional partners: Architecture+Design Scotland.

March

Da View Fae Da Window

McLellan Award winning playwright Jacqui Clark is working with young people on a creative writing and art project about the importance of buildings and place in Shetland.

April

Created Space Garden Opening, Arheim Quoys.

The opening of an outdoor landscaped space designed by Independent Living Project tenants working alongside two artists. Additional partners: Hjaltland Housing Association and Independent Living Project.

A Vision of Shetland’s Future: Creative Writing Competition

What will Shetland be like in the year 2100? Is Shetland a sustainable community? We want to hear your ideas and vision of Shetland’s future.

May

Parkour/ Free Running

Parkour explores and challenges architecture and public spaces. Power of Place will be working with young people in Shetland to develop a street event that will celebrate the innovative ways that they interact with public spaces.

Viking Unst Longhouse Reconstruction

A Viking Longhouse is being constructed in Unst to provide visitors and residents with a fuller appreciation of life in Viking times. Lead partners: Viking Unst/ Shetland Amenity Trust.

The Lures Project

Artist led community project creating temporary architectural structures in a coastal landscape. Additional partners: Blue Sky Studio

My Shetland

A series of film and other creative projects giving a platform for opinions about architecture and where they live from people who have perhaps not traditionally been heard. Additional partners: S.I.C. Adult Learning

June

Shetland Architects’ ‘Open Doors’

Alongside the already well-established national Open Doors Day, there will be a specific open-doors day where local architects, designers and artists will open their homes and studios to members of the public.

Shetland 2100: Youth Forum

What is it like to be young and live in Shetland now? What will it be like to be young and live in Shetland in 2100? An event aimed at hearing young people’s views and ideas about Shetland’s future as a place to live and work.

Portage: Crossing Points

Exhibition at Bonhoga Gallery of artwork containing interactive technology. Themes include: Shetland’s Diaspora and the lives of fishing families. The work stems out of artists’ residencies in Shetland. Additional partners: Newcastle University/ Scottish Arts Council/ Shetland Hamefarin/ Homecoming Scotland

51 Communities: 51 Halls

The Halls are centres of communities and play an essential role in peoples’ lives. As there are 51 Halls in Shetland it is perhaps even possible to imagine Shetland as 51 communities. Power of Place activities will take place in various Halls across Shetland during the summer. Additional partners: The Halls Association/ Anna Horne, artist

Bricks in Flicks: Architecture Film Showings

From horror and sci-fi to comedies and classics, architecture is often the forgotten star of the screen. Come and see the best of architecture in film. Additional partner: Shetland Film Club

September

International Architectural Conference

Building Resilience in Island Communities (17-18 September 2010)

An international conference presenting ideas on dealing with the challenge of future-proofing our dwellings, infrastructure and communities.  There will be a particular focus on remote and island communities in the northern latitudes.

National Door Open Days 2010

If you have ever wondered what goes on behind the doors of buildings you see every day then this is your chance to find out! This year Doors Open Days are part of the Power of Place programme.

POP on Air: The Place That Is Me

Community workshops leading to the production of a radio drama looking at Power of Place both as a physical place and a place within.

November

POP Tots

Exploring Power of Place through storytelling and music with pre-school age children.

Power of Place: Open Forum

People often have very strong opinions about architecture - but perhaps don’t have an appropriate forum to voice these opinions. This is an open, informal forum for to talking, discussing and contributing to the debates about the future of Shetland’s built environment and public spaces and deciding how voices will be heard in the future.

Power of Place Final Fling: POP Projections

Colourful projections onto buildings bringing together words, opinions, images and film made by Shetland people during Power of Place. You can take part by texting your contribution to the POP phone. 

Power of Place Final Fling: POP Gathering

An event to celebrate all the activities that have taken place during Power of Place: Shetland’s Year of Architecture and Place 2010.  Watch this space!
